11 January

• Castillo de Salas ( Spain): bulk carrier, sunk after running aground over rocks in Gijón, Spain

February

16 February

• Mikhail Lermontov ( Soviet Union): passenger liner, ran aground and sunk near Picton, New Zealand

April

12 April

• Pelican II ( Belgium): Severely damaged by engine room fire at Marseilles, France. Later repaired and returned to service.^[1]

May

14 May

• Pride of Baltimore ( USA): topsail schooner, capsized and sunk during a white squall 250 miles north of Puerto Rico

29 May

• Johanna ( West Germany): Collided with Ibn Otman ( Morocco) 35 nautical miles (65 km) off Casablanca and was extensively damaged. Later repaired and returned to service.^[2]

June

12 June

• Mineral Hoboken ( Belgium): Ran aground in the Orinoco River 45 nautical miles (83 km) out of Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela. Refloated on 18 June and returned to service.^[3]

July

11 July

• Jesica ( Honduras): Sank off Lagos, Nigeria ().^[2]

August

31 August

• Admiral Nakhimov ( Soviet Union): passenger liner, sunk in collision with bulk carrier Pyotr Vasev

October

10 October

• Murmajo ( Canada): The cargo ship caught fire and sank in the Bay of Fundy.^[4]

December

19 December

• Brave Themis ( Cyprus) sank off Crete.^[2]
